Preaching to the unconverted

The ESG ‘sector’ is often accused of preaching to the converted, a charge many will admit to, since pushing against doors bolted shut is neither a pleasant nor profitable activity. A report just published by KPMG indicates the wealth of opportunity that still awaits those attempting to enlighten corporates, and investors. The findings reveal that 72% of large and mid-cap companies worldwide don’t acknowledge the financial risks of climate change in their annual financial reports. KPMG has been monitoring developments in the field of Corporate Responsibility and sustainability reporting since 1993. This year the firm analysed the annual financial reports, corporate responsibility reports, and websites of 4,900 companies in 49 countries, its most extensive survey ever. It identifies four major trends:

  • Reporting on the financial risks associated with climate change

  • Reporting on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

  • Reporting of corporate human rights performance

  • Reporting on science-based carbon reduction targets
