MAPFRE Group's target of embedding ESG into its full balance sheet has also been a key topic addressed by Jose Luis, as illustrated in Case study: How MAPFRE is making sure that it embodies sustainability principles  as published by Insurance Investor

With the CIO's eye to the evolving regulatory landscape as it affects assets and investment objectives of insurance groups, he recently outlined why, despite rocketing sales of ESG funds across the industry, the transition to a net zero business risks being waylaid by excessive regulatory measures alongside ESG ratings relying on methodologies that may end up directing capital to areas where it is less effective in combating climate change.

The shifting investment landscape and choices of asset classes and vehicles is another area Jose Luis is keen to address, as illustrated in Case study: How MAPFRE GROUP is developing its investment capabilities as published by Fund Operator and in MAPFRE eyeing solvency ratio close to 200% as published by Trade Moneta

Behavioural finance is one of the more recent developments affecting asset management strategies.

MAPFRE AM has developed its Behavioral Fund to tap into opportunities, including those in professional sports.

As manager of the fund, Luis Garcia has invested in football clubs including Borossia Dortmund, Olympique Lyonnais and AFC Ajax, on the basis of long-term value generation outlined in case study: Super League exits don’t dent interest in soccer as investment as published in Pensions & Investments.

The Behavioural Fund is based on value investing principles, a point that has stood the strategy well, even during the period when the Covid pandemic saw football stadiums emptied, noted in case study Spanish asset manager doubles football investments during pandemic published in Fundview

MAPFRE has a 25% stake in French boutique LFR, leveraging its proprietary expertise in socially responsible investing, such as the ESG database Empreinte Ecosociale®.

Thus, CEO and CIO Stéphane Prévost and his colleagues are able to firmly tackle industry issues such as ‘greenwashing’ and related standards of research and data, as well as lessons learned over the past decade, as illustrated through case studies: Le retour d’expérience de La Financière Responsable , DES PASTILLES EFFERVESCENTES DANS L’ISR and MESURER L’EXTRA-FINANCIER : LA COLLECTE DES DONNÉES DE L’EMPREINTE ECOSOCIALE® ET LA QUALITÉ DU DIALOGUE ÉTABLI.
